This five-day intensive skills seminar is based in the Eastern Sierra. We use waterfall ice in Lee Vining Canyon and the mountains of the Eastern Sierra as an ideal training ground for working the progression from the basic skills to real mountaineering applications.

This course on scheduled dates has a minimum of 2 to run and a maximum guiding ratio of 3:1. We can arrange this program or similar on a custom basis. Click HERE for details.

    This five-day intensive skills seminar is based in the Eastern Sierra. We use waterfall ice in Lee Vining Canyon and the mountains of the Eastern Sierra as an ideal training ground for working the progression from the basic skills to real mountaineering applications. We’ll practice glacier travel systems and crevasse rescue, whiteout navigation, snow shelters, and discuss clothing, gear options and avalanche transceivers. We finish our week with a two-day, one-night ascent of a high peak.

    DAY 1
    Learning the skills behind the winter thrills.

    Learning the skills behind the winter thrills.

    Climbing skills review and introduction to alpine rock climbing.
    DAY 2 Winter-Mountaineering-Tier-3 Ice axe and crampon introduction and training.  Crevasse rescue systems and practice. Snow anchors.

    Winter mountaineering camp in the High Sierra.

    Winter mountaineering camp in the High Sierra.

    Morning session on trip planning, navigation, and route planning. Approach to local peak and set up camp. Location is conditions dependent.
    DAY 5
    Practicing the skills behind the winter chills.

    Practicing the skills behind the winter chills.

    Climb local peak and descend back to camp.  Break camp and head down to warm civilization for a course close wrap up.
