Barbara Wanner grew up in Switzerland. As a child she learned to love the mountains and the foothills around home. Living on a farm, she was involved in taking care of animals and working outside. Her love for adventures in the mountains was fostered by many family trips to the Alps, where she hiked from hut to hut in the summer or skied the backcountry in the winter. From a young age Barbara was interested in maps and compasses, and also started learning about avalanches. This love for mountain adventure is still a big part of her life today. Barbara has been climbing and skiing in different mountain ranges for twenty years.
A credentialed elementary school teacher in Switzerland, Barbara enjoys teaching and working with children. She came to the U.S. in 1995 to take a semester course with National Outdoor Leadership School. After that she worked with an organization that took youth-at-risk on multiday trips in the Sierra Nevada. On one of these trips Barbara met her husband Todd. They have three daughters – Laurea, Ana, and Kira – and live in Lee Vining, CA.
Barbara is an AMGA single pitch instructor and has completed the AMGA Rock Guide Course. She also took a Mountaineering Instructor course with N.O.L.S. She holds a current Wilderness First Responder certification and a Leave No Trace master certification. In the winters she works on ski patrol at Mammoth Mountain. Barbara holds a level 2 AIARE avalanche certificate and has taken a backcountry ski instructor course with the Swiss Mountain Guides Association.
