Welcome to the Sierra Mountain Guides News Page. This is where you can read our blog and find out the latest about the world in which we live, work, and play. If you have any big news of your own, send us an email and we would be happy to share it here.
Sierra Mountain Guides was incorporated and named in 1997 by a group of forward-thinking veteran local and international guides based in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Over the years guides have come and gone from the group and now long time local guides Howie Schwartz and Neil Satterfield have taken the reigns of the new SMG. This team along with the guides they employ is among the most qualified and skilled in the industry, upholding the highest standards for guiding excellence in the Sierra and worldwide.
These are the organizations, businesses, and individuals that help make up Sierra Mountain Guides community and have helped to make us who we are. We cannot express enough appreciation and gratitude to these folks in words, but we have listed them here as a testimonial to both their generosity and all-around bad-assedness. Please support them by using their products or services, donating to their causes, and/or thinking and saying nice things about them.

We couldn't do the guiding we do in our incredible National Forests without strong partnership with the land managers of the USFS. Sierra Mountain Guides operates in partnership and under permit with the Inyo, Sierra, & Toiyabe National Forests.
We couldn't do the guiding we do in our incredible National Parks without strong partnership with the land managers of the NPS. SMG is an authorized commercial operator in Yosemite National Park and Sequoia/King's Canyon National Parks.
We couldn't do some of the guiding we do in incredible places such as the Alabama Hills, the Happy Boulders, Granite Basin, and Red Rock National Conservation Area without strong partnership with the land managers of the BLM. Sierra Mountain Guides is authorized to operate commercially on these lands whenever we do. Red Rock NCA is a case where we apply for special use which we historically get granted every 2 years on average.
We work closely with CAMP to use, promote, test, and allow our guests to demo their innovative products. If you do not know this brand then you are not going light enough in the mountains. CAMP manufactures extremely technical and well designed products with an unbelievable weight to performance ratio. Support this innovative company, run in the US by a group of fantastic folks who actually get out and use these products.
Michael, Kristin, and Todd own and operate an amazing, one-of-a-kind, custom ski factory in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Formerly, run out of Michael's RV off the grid, they now have state of the art equipment and technology to take any skier through the process from ski design to creation. We have partnered with them to manufacture a demo rental fleet of carbon fiber skis equipped with AT bindings and continue to help them dial in the needs of the backcountry ski set. You have to check out what these guys are doing to believe it!
Evolv has been a great supporter of us at SMG. At least 4 of our guides are sponsored Evolv Athletes, including their ambassador Peter Croft. They have helped provide equipment for rock climbing camps, working with disabled veterans at the Wounded Warriors Project, SMG Kids! programs. In our opinion, Evolv makes the best climbing shoes on the market. They have revolutionized rock shoe design by significantly increasing comfort and fit without decreasing performance. Very cool, innovative company that, like their products, has gained traction within the industry.
A few of us work as Julbo athletes along with Julbo Ambassador Glen Plake and the sales team at Julbo USA to promote their excellent line of sunglasses and goggles. These guys are making such high quality, functional, and durable mountain products, and offering them at great prices. Their high mountain photochromatic lenses are the best we have ever seen. We cannot speak more highly of this company and their eyewear.
Ian Reid at Apex Mountain Products and PLUM North America has helped us to beat up and test the tech ski bindings made by this small Chamonix Valley gear manufacturer. These feature machined metal construction and have a more "bomber" feel on descent than Dynafit and other similar tech bindings on the market, even in the lighter touring and racing models. If you want to spend a little more coin on the best bindings out there check these out when you have a chance.
Ortovox makes top of the line backcountry and avalanche rescue equipment. They lend us demo equipment for our backcountry programs and avalanche courses. If you have not seen these innovative products then come on an SMG program and we will show you why they are one of our favorite backcountry gear manufacturers right now.
